The Greene County Commission held an emergency meeting on Monday, June 25 at 3 p.m.

They were facing two problems that needed to be solved.

One was  the need for a accounts payable clerk. Since the death of Vivica Spencer, other employees have tried to fill in on her job, but according to CFO Paula Bird, this was becoming more of a problem, especially where payroll was concerned.

It was unanimously decided to begin running an advertisement in the local newspaper as well as contact several community colleges and some four year schools to find the right candidate for the job.

The second item discussed was what county roads  would  get the ATRIP (Alabama  Transportation Rehabilition and Improvement Program) money.

It  was announced  at the previous commission meeting that  the county had been  awarded a $1.3 million federal project to resurface county  roads.

The Governor’s Office directed that the county coordinate  with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) to finalize the  construction and schedule  a date to let the project to contract.

County Engineer Arzo Abrams recommended CR 20, CR 72, CR 208 and CR 148 for the ATRIP Project.

“My reason for choosing these roads is  I was trying to get something in every commissioner’s district. All I can do is present the project and see if we will get the funding,” said Abrams.

He said that the first  part of CR 20 was funded with federal funds. “However,” said Abrams, “there is some criteria they are looking at. Will it get funded? I have no idea.”

He also said that matching money would be more than a million dollars.

After a lengthy discussion, on a vote of 3 to 2, CR 18 was added to the list of roads to be repaired. Commission members William “Nick” Underwood and Tennyson Smith voted against the motion.
