At the regular meeting of the Greene County Board of Education,  Kayla Dixon with TCU, project managers for construction of the new Greene County High School, explained to everyone present that although  construction has not begun, the  project is coming along  as expected.

She said that the State Building Inspector had requested  a meeting with the contractor on June 26.  At that meeting, all things  required to start work on the building should be in progress.

On  July 17 at 9 a.m.  there  will be a groundbreaking at the site of  the new  construction.

 Financial Report

 During his  report, CFO Shane Martin said that all accounts for  May had been  reconciled  and the School System had $13.6 million of which $9.5 was earmarked for construction of the new high school.

He  said the revenue  for May was $1 million and expenditures for the month were $1.4  million,  a $350,000 decrease.

Bingo money from the local bingo outlets totalled $39,312 for the past month.

Martin said the system was “in pretty good shape” for the year financially.

 Personnel  Report

 Personnel items approved included:

Mrs. Betty Morrow’s retirement as Assistant Principal at Carver Middle School effective June  29 and Mrs. Barbara Martin’s appointment as Principal effective July 1 was appproved.

Mrs. Sharon Jennings was employed as Principal at Eutaw Primary effective July 1, 2012.

Three  teachers were employed for Summer  School  2012 – Angelee Sledge, Vanessa Bryant and Christina Ridgeway. Their  salaries will be paid by Federal and At-Risk Funds.

Superintendent Dr. Emma Louie invited all those  present  to join  them in a 5:00 p.m. meeting at the  high school to discuss the importance and effect  of the ad valorem tax referendum.

Board Attorney Senator Hank Sanders advised that the bill for the referendum  for the ad valorem tax was passed by both Senate and House and would be on the November ballot. The last remaining hurdle before the election will be pre-clearance by the U. S. Justice Department, which he expects to happen.  He said the referendum was submitted to the Justice Department “several days ago.”

The money generated by the referendum will go toward financing the construction of the new high school.
