Mattie Atkins won Tuesday’s runoff election for Greene County Circuit Clerk overwhelmingly by a vote of 1,884 (68%) to 887 (32%) for Loretta Webb Wilson. Atkins carried every one of the 15 polling stations in Greene County some by substantial margins.

Atkins becomes the Democratic candidate for Circuit Clerk in the November General Election. Since she has no Republican opposition, the decision of yesterday’s primary is tantamount to election.

In the first primary, Atkins led by 1300 to 930 for Webb-Wilson and 677 for incumbent Circuit Clerk Etta Edwards. Edwards was eliminated for the runoff.

Atkins will take office in January 2013, after the November election when Edwards term ends.

Atkins currently serves as County Administrator with the Greene County Commission. She is a native of Greene County, a graduate of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and has worked in County government since her graduation from college.

She and her husband Willie Atkins, a Greene County businessman, have three children, Teresa, Kimberly and Willie Jr.

Atkins said, “ I want to sincerely thank the voters of Greene County for supporting me and especially thank those people who worked hard to assist me in the campaign. I hope this is an opportunity for us to unite to make the Clerk’s office and the County a better place for all
