The Greene County School Board, at its regular meeting on April 16, approved the termination of a new contract beween Teach for America and the Board. According to Superintendent Dr. Emma Louie, this does not mean that the program will be discontinued. It will continue with the five teachers hired under the contract signed in 2012. The new contract, however, would require an additional five teachers. “We just cannot afford to pay five additional teachers,” said Louie.

Another agenda item which will affect a number of people  was  the approval of a price increase for paid meals through the Child Nutrition  Program for FY 2012 – 2013. This increase was mandated by the State  of Alabama.

Following the opening invocation,  roll call, welcome to visitors, adoption of agenda and approval  of the minutes of the  last meeting, CSFO Shane Martin presented his financial report,

According to Martin, the system had a cash and cash equivalency of $13.9 million, which includes the $9.5 million set aside for the new high school.

Expenditures  for the month of March totalled  $1.2 million, with an income of $900,000, which left  a  $300,000 decline for the month.

Martin said that for the past 12 months, September, December and January were the only three  months where revenue exceeded expenditures.

Part of  this was due to the ad valorem taxes, most of which are paid in December and January.

The board approved the following action items:

*A Summer Seamless Feeding Program will be held at Carver Middle School from June 1 to June 29.

*Travel for Mrs. Shirley Ezell and Ms. Tameshia Porter to Memphis, TN to present at  the JBHM Third Annual Best Practices Conference on July 10-11, 2012.

*Travel for  Mr.  Rodney Wesley  and Mr. Fentriss Means to Fort Walton Beach, FL to  participate  in Fort Walton Beach Basketball Coaching Clinic on April 27-29, 2012.

*Travel for Mr. Rodney Wesley to  Tunica, MS  participate  in a Championship Clinic on May 4, 2012.

*Field trip request to Six Flags Over Georgia on April 27, 2012,  for fourth grade students and teachers at Carver Middle School.

*Mathematics textbook adoption

*Telephone maintenance  contract  with Your Source Communications, Inc. from February 2012 – February 2016.

*Payment of bills, claims and payroll.

*Bank reconciliations as submitted by Mr. Shane  Martin, CSFO.

*The board agreed that the Superintendent must meet with the Board President to prepare the meeting agenda two days before the agenda is sent out to all board members.

In her report Superintendent Dr. Emma Louie announced that a new Policy Manual will be available for review at the latest by July. The manual will include  Governing Principles, School Board Operations and Fiscal Management.

According to Louie, graduation for the seniors will be May 21; the last day of school will be  May 24 and the last  day for teachers will be May 25.

There will be a teen summit held Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m  – 1 p.m.

She also said she wanted to restructure and reorganize the youth activities  for the summer.

Personnel items approved by the Board were:

*Catastrophic Sick Leave for Jacqueline White, teacher at Carver Middle School.

*Retirement of Roger Gordon, Janitor at Eutaw Primary School.

*Employment of Sadie Moore as Early Childhood Coordinator at Eutaw Primary School (one year contract only funding source Save the Children).
