The Greene County School Board, at its regular meeting on April 16, approved the termination of a new contract beween Teach for America and the Board. According to Superintendent Dr. Emma Louie, this does not mean that the program will be discontinued. It will continue with the five teachers hired under the contract signed in 2012. The new contract, however, would require an additional five teachers. “We just cannot afford to pay five additional teachers,” said Louie.
Another agenda item which will affect a number of people was the approval of a price increase for paid meals through the Child Nutrition Program for FY 2012 – 2013. This increase was mandated by the State of Alabama.
Following the opening invocation, roll call, welcome to visitors, adoption of agenda and approval of the minutes of the last meeting, CSFO Shane Martin presented his financial report,
According to Martin, the system had a cash and cash equivalency of $13.9 million, which includes the $9.5 million set aside for the new high school.
Expenditures for the month of March totalled $1.2 million, with an income of $900,000, which left a $300,000 decline for the month.
Martin said that for the past 12 months, September, December and January were the only three months where revenue exceeded expenditures.
Part of this was due to the ad valorem taxes, most of which are paid in December and January.
