L-R are Commissioners Tennyson Smith, Allen Turner, Jr., and Nick Underwood, Asst. Engineer C. T. Wellman, Chief Engineer Arzo Abrams and Commissioner Marvin Childs on the newly repaved CR 131.
According to Nick Underwood, Chairman of the Greene County Commission, “several years ago this commission put in place its 10 year Strategic Plan. One of the key components of that plan was the paving of roads throughout Greene County. We have begun that process and as long as we can obtain matching funds for that project we will be paving more and more roads.
“Our first year in road paving can be termed a tragedy, in that we were forced to reduce staff to meet necessary match required by Federal Funds The latter part of 2011 proved to be unique given the commission received proceeds from bingo for infrastructure purposes. We are indebted to the Sheriff for allocating those funds. We as a commission believed that it is safe to say as long as bingo funds are available we will continue with our plan to pave roads and replace bridges.
“Under the leadership of our Engineer, Arzo Abrams, and Assistant Engineer C. B. Wellman, we have been successful in paving 3.8 miles of CR 60 and a major portion of CR 131 (7.3 miles). This is only the beginning! It is our hope, our dream, our desire to pave each and every road in Greene County.
Commissioner Tennyson Smith, representing District 2, said,, “Road paving is yet in progress.”
Commissioner Allen Turner, Jr., representing District 4, said, “This was a combined effort between the County Commission, the Sheriff and the Engineer’s Department.”
Commissioner Marvin Childs, representing District 5, said “This is just the beginning and more is on the way.”
Commissioner Elzora Fluker, representing District 3, was out of town.
