The Bridge Crossing Jubilee is held annually the first full weekend in March to commemorate “Bloody Sunday” and the victorious struggle for the right to vote.

This year’s event, March 1 – 5, however, is not just a commemoration, but a recommitment of thousands of national leaders and foot soldiers to counter the current attacks on the right to vote and human rights.

As part of the expanded program, the march will continue from Selma to Montgomery in the week following the Jubilee. Marchers from Alabama and across the country will walk March 5-9. There will be a rally each night at the end of the march and a major rally on the steps of the State Capitol in Montgomery on Friday, March 9.

The march will highlight the issues of voter suppression, immigration rights, educational reform and worker rights.  A full schedule and itinerary for the march and mass meetings will be in next week’s paper.

Featured among the celebratory and informative events is a Mayors’ Roundtable workshop entitled:  “Black Cities in Distress (Models of Success).”

The workshop will be held on Saturday, March 3rd from 10:15 am – 11:30 am at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center located at 211 Washington Street.  Invited panelists include Selma Mayor George Evans, Birmingham Mayor William A. Bell, Sr., Tuskegee Mayor Omar Neal, Mobile Mayor Samuel L. Jones and Memphis TN Mayor A. C. Wharton.
