Tuesday night’s (December 13) win over the Linden Patriots in Eutaw garnered Greene County’s basketball varsity team a four-in-a-row winning streak. The Greene County High Tigers varsity boys toppled the Linden varsity 73 to 34. The Greene County Lady Tigers also won over Linden, with a final score of 44 to 18. This marked the Lady Tigers’ three-in-a-row win.
The GCH Varsity faced the number 20th basketball player in the Nation, Devontae Pollard and the Wildcats from Kemper County High, DeKalb, MS on December 9. The Tigers were victorious in the home game with a final score of 66 to the Wildcats 54.
“It was a big motivation to know we had to compete with the number 20th player in the nation. We knew we were going to have to bring our ‘A Game,”’ said CyOntai Lewis.
The Tigers were not deterred by the presence of University of Alabama Head Basketball Coach, Anthony Grant, who reportedly was in attendance to observe a key player with Kemper County High.
The Tigers jumped out early on the Wildcats, ending the first quarter with scores of 18 to 4, Tigers leading. The Tigers kept playing hard throughout the next 3 quarters to the final victory of 66 – 54 over the Wildcats.
The leading scorers were: Dameian Craig with 19 points; CyOntai Lewis with 16 points; Devin Merriweather with 13 points and LeDedrian Walker with 11 points.
The Lady Tigers were successful over the Kemper County Lady Wildcats with a final score of 50-43.
The Greene County Varsity Tigers traveled to Fairfield on December 3 and brought home another victory. Dameian Craig shot two 3 pointers in a row, putting the Tigers back in the game. “Defense was the key,” said Craig. “We knew we were the better team, so we played like it and pulled it off.”
The leading scorers were Dameian Craig, 17 points; CyOntai Lewis, 14 points and LeDedrain Walker, 13 points.
The final score was Greene County, 57; Fairfield, 54. The Lady Tigers did not play Fairfield.
The first win for the Tigers in the four game sweep was over West Blocton. The Tigers hosted West Blocton, December 2.
The leading scorers for the Tigers were CyOntai Lewis with 15 points. Other high scorers included LeDedrain Walker with 11 points and Montel Harkness with 10 points.
The Tigers won over West Blocton 75-30. The Lady Tigers had a grand win of 58 to 9.
To date the Greene County Basketball Varsity’s winning record stands at 8 and 2 and the Lady Tigers are 5 and 2.
