According to statewide leaders, things are getting worse in Alabama. It seems like our state is trying to go back to the past that we struggled so hard to leave behind. Just look around you and you will see that the past is closing in on us again: diminished voting rights – racial attacks – attacks on Hispanics – decreased number of Black voter registrars – attacks on AEA, ASEA and other worker organizations – limited jobs – attacks on the poor – Tea Party’s plans to take this country back – demonizing President Obama – diminished right to trial by jury – loss of political power and so on. These forces are closing in on us. We must do something.
Leaders from more than 15 statewide organizations including ACLU of Alabama, AFL-CIO, Alabama ARISE, Alabama Education Association, Alabama Legislative Black Caucus, Alabama New South Coalition, Alabama Organizing Project, Black Mayors Association, FOCAL, Greater Birmingham Ministries, Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama, Ministerial Alliances, Montgomery Democratic Conference, NAACP, SCLC and 21st Century Youth Leadership Movement will meet at Alabama State University on Saturday, November 19. Their purpose is to discuss what can be done to stop the attempts to negate the rights for which so many fought and many died.
