At the regular meeting of the Greene County Board of Education, Superintendent Isaac Atkins announced that the board was successful in its bid to purchase property on the site of the old Stockyard on Hwy. 11 between Eutaw and Boligee.

They are acquiring the 43 acre site to construct a new high school. The board authorized Superintendent Atkins, Board Attorney Hank Sanders and CFO Shane Martin to complete the purchase. It was not announced when construction would begin.

In her report, Supt. Atkins announced that Carver Middle School was one of only four schools to be selected by the Southern Regional Education Board for a Making Middle Schools Work award. They will receive the award on July 20.

To be eligible for this award, the school had to have 75% or more of its students complete algebra and 50% or more of the students have to complete the middle grade assessment.

She also announced that 99% of the staff would be in place for the new school year.

The contract for the system’s new Chief Financial Officer, Shane Martin, was approved by the Board. Martin is a graduate of UWA in Livingston and formerly worked in the Alabama State Auditor’s Office. He currently lives in Tuscaloosa. He is originally from Cuba in Sumter County.

Action items approved included:

*Travel for JROTC instructors and three students to Mississippi State University to participate in LeaderSTATE.

*A financial report which showed that the income for the past month was $1,197,675 and expenditures were $1,264,765. This indicates that the system spent over $67,000 over the income for that month.

*Payment of bills and claims.

After a lengthy executive session, the following actions were approved:  *The retirement of James Powell as Transportation Supervisor effective August 1, 2011.

*The recall of the following employees -  Johnnie Hunter, Larry Burnette, Yvonne Turner, Tiffany Bishop, Korto Darpolar, Jason Spinks, Ross Wabbington, Halven Carodine, Angela Harkness, Tura Edwards, and Brandon Rutledge.

*The following people were appointed for the Textbook Adoption Committees for 2011-2012:

Greene County High School – Halven Carodine, Alphonso Morton, Marcus Steele (parent);

Paramount Jr. High – Charles Carter and Mrs. Jacqueline Edwards (parent); Central Office – Ms. Lisa M. Heard; Carver Middle School – Mrs. Sandra Gordon, Mrs. Mashad Kimber and Mrs. Lesia Means, parent; Eutaw Primary School – Mrs. Shirley Noland, Ms. LaShaun Henley and Ms. Inez Smith, parent.

*Approved the employment of David Liddell as English teacher at Greene County High School.

*Approved the employment of Erik Sellers as Science teacher at Greene County High School.

*Approved the employment of Larry Bowman as Math teacher at Greene County High School.

*Approved the employment of Ms. Holly Stanek as Spanish teacher at Greene County High School.

*Approved the employment of Ms. Mariohn Michel as Social Studies teacher at Greene County High School.

*Approved the employment of Charis Barnard as Math teacher at Carver Middle School.

*Approved the employment of Mrs. Kimberly Hutton as Secretary at Carver Middle School.

*Approved the employment of Mrs Makane Morrow as Local School Accounting for the Greene County School System.

*Approved employment of Mrs. Dorothy Bruno as Secretary at Greene County High School.
