Greene County Probate Judge Earlean Isaac is shown here presenting dictionaries from the Rotary Club to a Eutaw Primary third grade class.
The Rotary Club of Greene County is happy to announce their participation in an education grant from The Malone Family Foundation of Alabama.
This grant will enable all third grade students in the public school systems of Rotary District 6880 to have their own personal copy of a Webster’s dictionary. Rotary District 6880 covers 31 counties in the southern part of the state and includes approximately 23,000 third graders attending approximately 400 elementary schools. Rotary Club members from across the district will distribute the dictionaries beginning in October of 2010.
Members of the Greene County Rotary Club distributed some 200 dictionaries to public school 3rd graders in the City of Eutaw at Eutaw Primary, Town of Boligee at Paramount Jr High and City of Greensboro at Greensboro Elementary and other Greene County Schools. Members will personally hand deliver the dictionaries to students and give a short presentation of the Rotary 4 Way Test.
Of the things we think, say or do
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Research indicates that third grade is the appropriate time for beginning use of a dictionary. In addition, data shows that most third graders in Alabama do not have personal dictionaries. Without access to a dictionary, assignments both inside and outside the classroom may be limited.
Greene County Rotary members participating in the preparation and distribution are Ralph Banks, President; Danny Cooper, Membership Chair, Probate Judge Earlean Isaac, Betty Banks, and Viveca Spencer. Distribution was made on November 18-19, 2010 just in time for the Thanksgiving Season. All third graders were challenged to learn 20 new words during the holiday season. The classes in Greene County with the highest number of participants will receive a special treat.
Special thanks to Laddi Jones, Barbara Hunter and Betty Banks for attending each event and taking photos.
